MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG WOLFIE
What are some of the highlights of Wolfie’s career?
“Wolfie has been the most incredible partner. We had many successes and he went on to qualify as a firearms support dog, one of the highest achievements for a working dog. He had many arrests, helped to find high-risk missing persons and had lots of incredible finds during his career.”
Why is your relationship with Wolfie so special?
“After two years off work, bed-ridden, due to ME, I was determined to get back to work. Wolfie and I were put together because my colleagues knew he’d help me get back to work. I didn’t have to re-train with a young, boisterous dog which would have added pressure to my already struggling body and put more strain on my physical health.”
Why did Wolfie retire?
“We had a really busy shift one night and I got him out of the van to track a suspect but I knew instantly that something wasn’t right. His behaviour was completely different. I took him to the vets and they diagnosed him with PTSD, and he was retired straight away.”
What made you adopt Wolfie when he retired?
“There was no doubt he’d be coming home with me; not after what he’d done for me and what we’d been through together.”
HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG WOLFIE IN RETIREMENT
RPD Wolfie helped his handler, Louise McMullen, back into work after she was diagnosed with ME, left bed-ridden and needed two years off work. He was a confident and reliable police dog and her colleagues knew he’d help ease her back into work.
The duo worked together for West Midlands Police until an incident in 2018 when a car chase saw Louise’s car skid off the road, hit a tree and burst into flames.
Louise was knocked unconscious and Wolfie, now 15, was seriously injured.
Louise managed to drag him from the car and colleagues rushed him to the vet and he returned to work but retired due to PTSD a few months later.
The injuries from the crash left him with chronic arthritis and he started chewing his legs due to the pain in his joints.
Louise knew, after everything the pair had been through, that she couldn’t be parted from him so she adopted him when he retired.
We stepped in to help with the cost of monthly injections to manage the pain from his arthritis and ease the financial pressure on Louise and her family.
“It’s so amazing that the charity offers support to dogs throughout everything. It’s taken so much pressure off of us, as a family, and it gives Wolfie the security he need going forwards.”
