HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG NORMA IN RETIREMENT

RPD Norma was one when she joined the Ministry of Defence Police to train as a general purpose dog.

She partnered with handler, Eddie Bowes, and the duo was based at Atomics Weapons Establishment Aldermanston in Berkshire. They patrolled the site and provided security.

The pair later moved to another Ministry of Defence site in Corsham, Wiltshire, where they provided vital further security.

In 2020, Norma retired at the age of seven having been diagnosed with hip dysplasia, and Eddie kept her on as a pet.

Eddie said: “Norma loves people and, whilst working, was always getting cuddles from staff at the bases. Now she’s the perfect home dog and loves being part of her pack with her three adopted sisters: Mollie the terrier, Ella the bichon frise, and German Shepherd Izie, my current working dog.”

“Norma and Ella are always together and are the best of friends!” Eddie added. “They’re often grooming each other and snoozing side-by-side.”

Eddie signed Norma – now aged 11 – up to our Foundation and was thrilled when our partnership with Barking Heads meant she qualified for a lifetime’s supply of dog food.

We also supported her when she needed an operation to remove a growth from her eyelid that had been causing her discomfort.

Eddie said: “All pet owners will know that having a dog is not cheap and with three of our own at home, bills can quickly build up.”
