HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG MALIK IN RETIREMENT
RPD Malik worked for Merseyside Police for almost six years, from 2014, until his retirement.
When his handler and wife, Carrieanne Bennett, separated in 2020, Malik stayed with his adoptive mum and little sister, Scarlet.
“He took really well to his retirement,” Carrieanne said. “He was really chilled out and enjoyed the extra attention. I’d often find him in my six-year-old daughter’s room. He’d sleep at the foot of her bed. She’s always known life with Malik.”
When Malik had a health scare and started bleeding from his genitals, Carrieanne took him to the vets and we supported the cost of his treatment.
She said: “The Thin Blue Paw Foundation helped us and covered his bill which was brilliant. It was just before Christmas, my first after the separation, so extra costs would have been a struggle.”

When he fell ill again and needed blood tests – which discovered he was suffering from kidney failure – we also helped with the bill. But sadly, Malik wasn’t getting any better.
“Malik deserved to live a happy, good quality life and the vet explained that he wouldn’t improve,” Carrieanne said. “It was so sad to see the life drain from him and, in May 2021, he was put to sleep.
“I still have the clothes I was wearing that day; I didn’t wash them and I put them aside with little bits of his fur on them.
“I also have a little shrine; with his favourite toys, his blanket and his collar where he used to lie. Nothing has moved since he passed.”

IN MEMORY OF
RPD MALIK 2014-2021
“Losing Malik was awful. I just didn’t want to let him go. I have his ashes by the front door so they’re the first and last things I see each day. I always say good morning and goodnight to him and tell him what I’ve been up to at work that day.” – Carrieanne
