MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG JOE
What are some of the highlights of Joe’s career?
Highlights include supporting the policing operations for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the American Presidential visits.
What does retirement look like for Joe?
“Joe enjoys family walks in the woods, his weekly hydrotherapy sessions and stealing socks from the washing basket!”
What is your favourite memory with Joe since he retired?
“My favourite memory with Joe since his retirement was his first Christmas. It was clear very early on how much he loves Christmas; he helps everyone rip open their presents, loves roast turkey and always gets given a new pair of socks!”
Tell us a funny story about Joe…
“One morning we were working and as he was searching a vehicle the driver noticed he had something on his ears. On closer inspection we realised my son had stuck some Peppa Pig stickers to his ears at home before work and I hadn’t noticed!”
HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG JOE IN RETIREMENT
RPD Joe spent his whole career as an explosive search detection dog with the Ministry of Defence Police, based near Reading.
The eight-year-old carried out searches at critical infrastructure sites throughout the country as well as supporting operations at large events, such as the Commonwealth Games and VIP visits.
He worked alongside his handler Ian Brake and, when he was retired due to bilateral luxating patella, bilateral elbow dysplasia and chronic arthritis at just six, he went to live with Ian and his family in Berkshire.
Joe now enjoys the quiet life with his family – both human and dog – and loves to steal socks from the laundry basket!
He has weekly hydrotherapy and regular medication to help manage the conditions and we cover the cost of his monthly pain-relief injection.
Ian said: “Paying for this injection every month has been hard for us to afford given everything else we’re paying for and the normal cost of living issues.”
“Having the support of the Thin Blue Paw gives us peace of mind and we’re so grateful for your support.“
Ian, Joe’s former handler and owner
