MEET RETIRED POLICE DOG DONJA
What are some of the highlights of Donja’s career?
Being part of a protection compliment at a Nato conference. My husband had to tell a few people, including a General from overseas, that they couldn’t pet her while she was working!
Tell us a funny story about Donja…
“During a training exercise, my husband wanted to see what Donna would do during a search in a building if the person she found was unconscious. She was used to looking for someone who was being aggressive, but this time the person was unconscious and laying on the floor. Donna was meant to bark an alert as soon as she found the person. Instead, she was very concerned and cried before licking all over his face. He covered his face and then she remembered she needed to start barking!”
What does retirement look like for Donja?
“We enjoy walks at the local park and then snoozes while I work from home. At the weekend we take her for longer walks or a day out at the woods or beach. She loves it when we have visitors to stay, and adores getting fuss. She likes to watch over the kids in the playground and keep watch for squirrels!”
What is your favourite memory with Donja since she retired?
“Donna has never been a fan of water, so I didn’t expect her reaction when I took her to the beach for the first time. She runs away from the garden hose and bath when we’re at home. As soon as she smelled the sea, she got very excited! She dragged me down the beach and charged into the sea with me in tow. She loved digging for rocks under the water and digging big holes on the beach.”
HOW WE HELPED RETIRED POLICE DOG DONJA IN RETIREMENT
RPD Donja served with the Ministry of Defence Police for three and a half years before being medically retired early, just after her fifth birthday, when she was diagnosed with spondylosis.
She was an intelligent, intuitive dog who displayed good problem-solving and brilliant tracking.
She was paired with PC Ash Collins to protect MoD properties and RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire, as well as supporting Hampshire and Thames Valley Police.
Seven-year-old Donja – also known as Donna or Donna Kebab to her family – now enjoys retired life with her former handler and his wife, Heidi Taylor, in Wiltshire, as well as four cats.
She enjoys going for long walks, playing (and destroying!) toys, raiding the treat cupboard, and has a bed on every floor of the townhouse she calls home.
We support Donja, who suffers from allergies, with regular medication to manage her allergies and her arthritis.
She also receives free food for life through our partnership with Barking Heads.
“We’re very grateful to the Thin Blue Paw Foundation for supporting Donja’s regular medication and delivering her favourite food for free! It’s truly a dog’s life for her now!“
Heidi, Donja’s owner
