A MESSAGE FROM OUR MAJOR SUPPORTER ANIMAL FRIENDS PET INSURANCE:

“Animal Friends Insurance is delighted to be supporting these awards once again having witnessed first-hand the extraordinary impact the Thin Blue Paw Foundation is making for serving and retired police dogs across the UK. Back in 2021, the awards raised awareness of the astonishing bravery of Britain’s police dogs and their handlers who had given everything to courageously protect our communities and keep us safe. This year, the nominees and winners’ stories were once again truly inspirational and portray the true pinnacle of devotion and commitment as they dedicate themselves tirelessly to saving lives, catching criminals, and protecting our streets without question. It’s a privilege to be able to give something back to these incredible dogs and support them throughout what is hopefully a long and happy retirement.” - Chief Executive, Westley Pearson

A MESSAGE FROM THE THIN BLUE PAW FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

“Police dogs are definitely the unsung heroes of our frontline policing teams and commit their lives to using their noses, paws and teeth to fight crime, help people, locate cash, drugs and firearms, and keep their colleagues and communities safe. As well as supporting these dogs once they hang up their harnesses at the end of their careers, at the Thin Blue Paw Foundation we wanted to celebrate and showcase the incredible job they do with our annual awards. This year’s winners are prime examples of the incredible bravery, strength, specialist skills, and dedication these wonderful dogs show every day when they head out to work; as well as the important role dog handlers play in helping police forces across the UK fight crime. This is our way of saying thank you.” - Co-founder and Trustee, Kieran Stanbridge.

MEET OUR 2022 THIN BLUE PAW AWARD WINNERS:

PC Andrew Kenyon and Police Dog Eddie

Greater Manchester Police

Rising Star Award

Congratulations to Greater Manchester Police’s Police dog Eddie and his handler, PC Andrew Kenyon, who have been named as winners of the Rising Star Award. In just 18 months on the job, they’ve had more than 60 arrests and assisted with major jobs such as protecting a colleague who was being attacked by a crowbar.

PC Grace Feavyour and Police Dog Astro

Leicestershire Police

Outstanding Bravery Award

German Shepherd Police dog Astro received the Outstanding Bravery Award after jumping to defend his handler, PC Grace Feavyour, during a confrontational arrest in 2021. Four-year-old Leicestershire Police dog Astro was injured as he protected his handler but continued to keep hold of the suspect. What a hero!

PC Ian Sweeney and Retired Police Dog Logan

Humberside Police

Lifetime Achievement Award

Retired police dog Logan and his handler, PC Ian Sweeney, have been named winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Humberside Police duo worked together on the streets of Lincolnshire for more than seven years, assisting in the arrests of many criminals, saving countless lives and keeping his community safe. German Shepherd RPD Logan, eight, never missed a day’s work even after being shot in the head three times while protecting his partner in 2018.

PC Linda McBride and Retired Police Dog Luna

Police Scotland

Lifesaver Award

We’re thrilled that retired police dog Luna has been named winner of the Lifesaver Award after saving 38 lives during her eight-year career with PC Linda McBride. The Police Scotland pair were excellent at tracking, saving the lives of vulnerable missing people, elderly people, suicidal individuals and victims of crime. Ten-year-old German Shepherd Luna has now retired but will never be forgotten by the people she helped.

PC Chris McDonough and Police Dog Toro

Cheshire and North Wales Police

Crime Fighting Duo Award

Police dog Toro and PC Chris McDonough, from Cheshire and North Wales Police, have been named as winners of the Crimefighting Duo Award. Three-year-old Dutch Herder Toro and his handler have proven themselves as a ‘formidable crimefighting duo’ in just two-and-a-half-years working together with huge success – particularly in tracking – and many arrests. Toro earned himself a reputation when he detained a suspect and dragged him out of a hedgerow by his Crown Jewels, with the footage making it onto TV!
